| China Aster Seeds ( Callistephus chinensis ). China Aster, a tender annual from the Orient, was grown by Williamsburg's John Custis in 1737. By 1804 Bernard McMahon of Philadelphia was selling eleven cultivars in a variety of fancy forms. These seeds represent the species, or wild, form of China Aster; they have simple, single, blue flowers on two to three foot plants. Sow the seeds after the last spring frost in a sunny garden site and thin the seedlings so they are two feet apart.
