Canterbury Bells were among the first imported flowers grown in colonial American gardens, where they were valued for their showy three-foot stalks of bell-shaped flowers as well as for their edible roots. In 1812, Thomas Jefferson recorded sowing the "Bellflower" on the flower roundabout at Monticello.
