Jefferson planted double-flowering Balsam seeds at Shadwell in 1767, and also received seeds from Philadelphia nurseryman, Bernard McMahon, in 1812. The Balsam (or Touch-me-not) is a tender annual for sun or partial shade. Plants grow to three feet with pink, white, red, and salmon flowers in the summer.
